RESUMO

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The use of corticosteroids in chronic drug-induced liver injury (DILI) is an important issue. Our previous randomized controlled trial showed that patients with chronic DILI benefited from a 48-week steroid stepwise reduction (SSR) regimen. However, it remains unclear whether a shorter course of therapy can achieve similar efficacy. In this study, we aimed to assess whether a 36-week SSR can achieve efficacy similar to that of 48-week SSR. METHODS: A randomized open-label trial was performed. Eligible patients were randomly assigned to the 36- or 48-week (1:1) SSR group. Liver biopsies were performed at baseline and at the end of treatment. The primary outcome was the proportion of patients with relapse rate (RR). The secondary outcomes were improvement in liver histology and safety. RESULTS: Of the 90 participants enrolled, 84 (87.5%) completed the trial, and 62 patients (68.9%) were women. Hepatocellular damage was observed in 53.4% of the cohort. The RR was 7.1% in the 36-week SSR group but 4.8% in the 48-week SSR group, as determined by per-protocol set analysis (p = 1.000). Significant histological improvements in histological activity (93.1% vs. 92.9%, p = 1.000) and fibrosis (41.4% vs. 46.4%, p = .701) were observed in both the groups. Biochemical normalization time did not differ between the two groups. No severe adverse events were observed. CONCLUSIONS: Both the 36- and 48-week SSR regimens demonstrated similar biochemical response and histological improvements with good safety, supporting 36-week SSR as a preferable therapeutic choice (ClinicalTrials.gov, NCT03266146).

RESUMO

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a leading cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide, and emerging evidence suggests that the gut microbiota may play a role in its development and progression. In this study, the association between B. thetaiotaomicron, a gut microbiota species, and HCC recurrence, as well as patient clinical outcomes, was investigated. It was observed that B. thetaiotaomicron-derived acetic acid has the potential to modulate the polarization of pro-pro-inflammatory macrophagess, which promotes the function of cytotoxic CD8+ T cells. The increased biosynthesis of fatty acids was implicated in the modulation of pro-inflammatory macrophages polarization by B. thetaiotaomicron-derived acetic acid. Furthermore, B. thetaiotaomicron-derived acetic acid was found to facilitate the transcription of ACC1, a key enzyme involved in fatty acid biosynthesis, through histone acetylation modification in the ACC1 promoter region. Curcumin, an acetylation modification inhibitor, significantly blocked the inhibitory effects of B. thetaiotaomicron and acetic acid on HCC tumor growth. These findings highlight the potential role of gut microbiota-derived acetic acid in HCC recurrence and patient clinical outcomes, and suggest a complex interplay between gut microbiota, immune modulation, fatty acid metabolism, and epigenetic regulation in the context of HCC development. Further research in this area may provide insights into novel strategies for HCC prevention and treatment by targeting the gut microbiota and its metabolites.

RESUMO

The van der Waals interaction between colloids and nanoparticles is one of the key components to understanding particle aggregation, attachment, and assembly. While the ubiquity of anisotropic particle shapes and surface roughness is well-recognized in nanocrystalline materials, the effects of both on van der Waals forces and torques have not been adequately investigated. In this study, we develop a numerical scheme to determine the van der Waals forces and torques between cubic particles with multiple configurations and relative orientations. Our results show that the van der Waals torque due to anisotropic particle shapes is appreciable at nearly all configurations and mutual angles, outcompeting Brownian torque for various materials systems and conditions. Surface roughness enhances this particle shape effect, resulting in stronger van der Waals interactions ascribed to protrusions on the surfaces. Moreover, a scaling analysis indicates that the surface roughness alters the separation dependence of the van der Waals force and, more importantly, significantly influences the dynamics of two approaching particles. Our results clearly demonstrate that surface roughness and anisotropic shape play a crucial role in the energetics and kinetics of various particle-scale and emergent phenomena, such as crystal growth by oriented attachment, nanomaterials synthesis and assembly, mud flow rheology, as well as the deposition of natural nanocrystals within the subsurface.

RESUMO

Omicron BF.7 became the predominant SARS-CoV-2 variant in Beijing after the abolishment of Zero-COVID policy in December 2022. The ability of antibodies elicited by BF.7 infection to cross-react with SARS-CoV-2-like viruses is unknown. This study aimed to investigate the cross-reactive neutralizing antibodies against SARS-CoV-2-related pangolin coronavirus GX_P2V in sera from vaccinated and/or SARS-CoV-2-infected individuals. All vaccinated individuals who recovered from Omicron BF.7 breakthrough infections exhibited substantially higher levels of neutralizing antibodies against GX_P2V, compared to other subject groups, with a geometric mean titer (GMT) of 362. Uninfected individuals who received four-mixed-dose vaccines also demonstrated higher levels of neutralizing antibodies (GMT = 44) against GX_P2V than those uninfected individuals who received two- or three-dose vaccines and those unvaccinated convalescents of wild-type SARS-CoV-2. This study highlights the significance of prior vaccinations with wild-type SARS-CoV-2 vaccines in generating potent cross-protective immunity against future spillovers of SARS-CoV-2-like viruses.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The role of carbohydrate antigen 19-9 (CA 19-9) in response assessment among patients with intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (iCCA) remains unknown. The authors studied the association of the CA 19-9 response (defined as a reduction >50% from baseline) with the radiologic response and the outcome in patients with unresectable iCCA. METHODS: A prospective cohort of 422 patients who were initially diagnosed with unresectable iCCA, had baseline CA 19-9 levels ≥100 U/mL, and received treatment with systemic therapies at the authors' institution between January 2017 and December 2021 were enrolled in this study. The radiologic response was assessed using the Response Evaluation Criteria in Solid Tumors version 1.1. A landmark assessment of the CA 19-9 response and the radiologic response was performed. The associations between CA 19-9 response and imaging response, progression-free survival (PFS), and overall survival (OS) were analyzed. RESULTS: Two hundred sixty-seven patients (63.3%) had a CA 19-9 response. A CA 19-9 response was observed in 123 of 132 (93.2%) radiologic responders and in 144 of 290 (49.7%) radiologic nonresponders (p < .001). CA 19-9 responders outperformed nonresponders in median PFS (10.6 vs. 3.6 months; hazard ratio [HR], 4.8 months; 95% confidence interval [CI], 3.8-6.0 months; p < .001) and OS (21.4 vs. 6.3 months; HR, 5.3 months; 95% CI, 4.2-6.7 months; p < .001). The common independent predictors of both OS and PFS included metastasis, CA 19-9 nonresponder status, and radiologic nonresponder status in multivariable analysis. CONCLUSIONS: CA 19-9 response is a valuable addition to assess tumor response and is associated with improved outcomes in patients with iCCA. Achieving a CA 19-9 response should be one of the therapeutic objectives of patients with iCCA after systemic therapies. PLAIN LANGUAGE SUMMARY: A decline in carbohydrate antigen 19-9 levels from elevated baseline levels should be one of the therapeutic aims of patients with intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma who are managed with systemic therapies.

RESUMO

Grassland restoration measures control soil degradation and improve soil quality (SQ) worldwide, but there is little knowledge about the effectiveness of restoration measures affecting SQ in arid areas, and the restoration rate of degraded grasslands to natural restoration grasslands and reseeded grasslands remains unclear. To establish a soil quality index (SQI) to evaluate the effects of different grassland restoration measures on SQ, continuous grazing grassland (CG) (as a reference), grazing exclusion grassland (EX), and reseeding grassland (RS) were selected and sampled in the arid desert steppe. Two soil indicator selection methods were conducted (total data set (TDS) and minimum data set (MDS)), followed by three SQ indices (additive soil quality index (SQIa), weighted additive soil quality index (SQIw), and Nemoro soil quality index (SQIn)). The results indicated that SQ was better assessed using the SQIw (R 2 = 0.55) compared to SQIa and SQIn for indication differences among the treatments due to the larger coefficient of variance. The SQIw-MDS value in CG grassland was 46% and 68% lower than that of EX grassland and RS grassland, respectively. Our findings provided evidence that restoration practices of grazing exclusion and reseeding can significantly improve the SQ in the arid desert steppe, and native plant reseeded can accelerate soil quality restoration.

RESUMO

Group target tracking (GTT) is a promising approach for countering unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). However, the complex distribution and high mobility of UAV swarms may limit GTTs performance. To enhance GTT performance for UAV swarms, this paper proposes potential solutions. An automatic measurement partitioning method based on ordering points to identify the clustering structure (OPTICS) is suggested to handle non-uniform measurements with arbitrary contour distribution. Maneuver modeling of UAV swarms using deep learning methods is proposed to improve centroid tracking precision. Furthermore, the group's three-dimensional (3D) shape can be estimated more accurately by applying key point extraction and preset geometric models. Finally, optimized criteria are proposed to improve the spawning or combination of tracking groups. In the future, the proposed solutions will undergo rigorous derivations and be evaluated under harsh simulation conditions to assess their effectiveness.

RESUMO

Solids built out of active components have exhibited odd elastic stiffness tensors whose active moduli appear in the antisymmetric part and which give rise to non-Hermitian static and dynamic phenomena. Here, we present a class of active metamaterial featured with an odd mass density tensor whose asymmetric part arises from active and nonconservative forces. The odd mass density is realized using metamaterials with inner resonators connected by asymmetric and programmable feed-forward control on acceleration and active forces along the two perpendicular directions. The active forces produce unbalanced off-diagonal mass density coupling terms, leading to non-Hermiticity. The odd mass is then experimentally validated through a one-dimensional nonsymmetric wave coupling where propagating transverse waves are coupled with longitudinal ones whereas the reverse is forbidden. We reveal that the two-dimensional active metamaterials with the odd mass can perform in either energy-unbroken or energy-broken phases separated by exceptional points along principal directions of the mass density. The odd mass density contributes to the wave anisotropy in the energy-unbroken phase and directional wave energy gain in the energy-broken phase. We also numerically illustrate and experimentally demonstrate the two-dimensional wave propagation phenomena that arise from the odd mass in active solids. Finally, the existence of non-Hermitian skin effect is discussed in which boundaries host an extensive number of localized modes. It is our hope that the emergent concept of the odd mass can open up a new research platform for mechanical non-Hermitian system and pave the ways for developing next-generation wave steering devices.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The role of chemoradiotherapy in unresectable locally advanced pancreatic cancer is still unclear. METHODS: Data from patients with unresectable locally advanced pancreatic cancer were extracted from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results Program database. Univariate and multivariate Cox regression analyses were conducted to identify the independent prognostic factors of survival. Propensity score matching was carried out to minimize the interference of confounding factors. Subgroup analysis was performed to screen the characteristics of patients who would benefit from chemoradiotherapy. RESULTS: A total of 5002 patients with unresectable locally advanced pancreatic cancer were included. Among them, 2423 (48.4%) received chemotherapy, and 2579 (51.6%) received chemoradiotherapy. The median overall survival of all patients was 11 months. Multivariate Cox analysis showed that age (p < 0.001), marital status (p < 0.001), tumor size (p = 0.001), N stage (p = 0.015) and radiotherapy (p < 0.001) were independent prognostic factors of survival. Both before (HR, 0.817; 95% CI, 0.769-0.868; p < 0.001) and after (HR, 0.904; 95% CI, 0.876-0.933; p < 0.001) propensity score matching, chemoradiotherapy significantly improved the median overall survival of patients from 10 to 12 months. Subgroup analysis showed that chemoradiotherapy was significantly associated with improved survival regardless of sex, primary site or N stage. In addition, the following subgroups all significantly benefited from chemoradiotherapy: age ≥ 50 years, not divorced, grade 2-4, tumor size > 2 cm, adenocarcinoma, mucinous adenocarcinoma and white race. CONCLUSIONS: Chemoradiotherapy is highly recommended for patients with unresectable locally advanced pancreatic cancer.

RESUMO

In this study, a dual-polarized and dual band reflective Fresnel zone plate with reconfigurable beam is proposed on the basis of fractal frequency selective surface (FSS) unit with nearly 360° phase tunability. Firstly, a new phase distribution calculation strategy based on Fresnel diffraction theory is proposed to improve the performance under certain scenarios like sparse arrays. Then, a novel fractal shape is put forward and applied to the design of the Fresnel zone plate. The introduction of the fractal structure makes the unit cell perform dual band, dual polarization and 309° phase tunability characteristics. Due to the self-symmetry of the unit cell, the proposed fractal Fresnel zone plate (FFZP) is capable of beam steering in ± 45° in both TE and TM incident waves. Besides, the proposed structure shows small performance degradation when it comes to oblique incidence up to 45°, which decreases the focal diameter ratio and profile of the proposed FFZP. The operating bandwidth of the FFZP can reach up to 700 MHz at X and Ku bands. It is applicable in a wide range of RF and microwave settings such as satellite and base station.

RESUMO

Because of the high hardness, brittleness, and anisotropy of reaction-bonded silicon carbide composites (RB-SiC), it is challenging to process high-quality textures on their surfaces. With the advantages of high processing accuracy and low processing damage, femtosecond laser processing is the preferred technology for the precision processing of difficult-to-process materials. The present work used a femtosecond laser with a linear scanning path and a spot diameter of 18 µm to process microgrooves on RB-SiC. The influence of different processing parameters on the microgroove profile, dimensions, and ablation rate (AR) was investigated. The ablation width Wa and average ablation depth Da of microgrooves were evaluated, and the various patterns of varying processing parameters were obtained. A model for Wa prediction was developed based on the laser fluence within the finite length (FL). As a result, the experimental values were distributed near the prediction curve with a maximum error of 20.4%, showing an upward trend of gradually decreasing increments. For a single pass, the AR value was mainly determined by the laser energy, which could reach the scale of 106 µm3/s when the laser energy was greater than 50 µJ. For multiple passes, the AR value decreased as the number of passes increased and it finally stabilized. The above research will provide theoretical and experimental support for the high-quality and efficient processing of RB-SiC surface textures.

RESUMO

Purpose As a non-invasive treatment, stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) has been an emerging and effective option for patients with unresectable intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (ICC). The Cyber Knife has an SBRT system, which can realize real-time tracking of tumors during treatment. It can protect the surrounding normal liver tissue while the tumor gets the therapeutic dose. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the factors affecting the local control rate for patients after SBRT treatment, and to predict the factors affecting survival rates, then to report the 3-year actual survival rates after treatment and identify the influencing factors of 3-year survival rate. Materials and Methods We conducted a long-term follow-up of 43 patients with unresectable intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma who underwent Cyber Knife in our hospital from January 2016 to December 2018. Regular medical check-ups were performed every 2–3 months after SBRT to evaluated the effect of treatment. Results The median follow-up time was 15 months (4-78 months), and the median progression-free survival (PFS) was 6 months (95% CI, 2.788–9.212) and the median overall survival (OS) was 12 months (95% CI, 3.434–20.566), respectively. Based on modified Response Evaluation and Criteria in Solid Tumor (mRECIST), response rate (RR) and disease control rate (DCR) of SBRT in unresectable ICC were 55.2% and 86%. The 1-, 2- and 3-years OS rate were 51.2%, 32.6% and 23.3%. Multivariate analysis based on competing risk survival analysis identified that patients with multiple nodules, large diameter, high level of CA199 and CEA, poor ECOG performance status had worse overall survival (p < 0.05). Patients who survived ≥3 years had significantly lower levels of CEA, CA199, smaller tumor diameters and lower number of lesions (p < 0.05) (AU)

RESUMO

Background: This research sought to elucidate the effects of peroxiredoxin 6 (PRDX6) on the biological processes in diabetic nephropathy (DN) and to identify the underlying regulatory mechanism related to toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4)/nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB) signaling. Methods: To induce an in vitro DN cellular model, human kidney 2 (HK-2) cells were treated with high glucose (HG). The mitochondrial membrane potential, adenosine triphosphate level, reactive oxygen species generation, and oxidative stress of the cells were then evaluated. After the PRDX6 level had been determined, the effects of its overexpression on the mitochondrial membrane potential, adenosine triphosphate level, reactive oxygen species generation, and oxidative stress of the cells were assessed. Next, cytochrome c expression, cell viability, cell apoptosis, the inflammatory level, and the TLR4/NF-κB signaling-related factors were assessed. After the addition of the TLR4 activator CRX-527 or the NF-κB activator phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate (PMA), cell viability, cell apoptosis and the inflammatory level were evaluated again. Results: The results revealed that HG exposure triggered mitochondrial dysfunction and oxidative stress and decreased PRDX6 expression in the HK-2 cells. PRDX6 elevation exacerbated cell viability while alleviating mitochondrial membrane potential loss, oxidative stress, apoptosis, and inflammation in the HG-treated HK-2 cells. Further, PRDX6 inhibited HG-induced TLR4/NF-κB activation. The administration of CRX-527 or PMA reversed the effects of PRDX6 on the cell viability, apoptosis, and inflammation of the HG-exposed HK-2 cells. Conclusions: To conclude, PRDX6 appears to protect HG-exposed HK-2 cells against inflammation and apoptosis by inhibiting TLR4/NF-κB signaling.

RESUMO

A NiH-catalyzed polarity-reversed hydroamination of ß,γ-, γ,δ- and δ,ε-unsaturated alkenes with electrophilic anthranils was developed. This reaction proceeds in a highly regio- and chemoselective manner to afford γ, δ and ε-arylamines bearing a carbonyl or alcohol functionality with 100% atom efficiency. Preliminary mechanistic studies indicate that the chemoselectivity is controlled by the base and the alcohol product is derived from the base-catalyzed hydrosilylation of the CO bond.

RESUMO

Grazing is the basic way of grassland utilization, and reasonable grazing is an important way to maintain the health of the grassland ecosystem. However, the traditional grazing time in warming seasons is negative for sustainable desert steppe ecosystem. Determining reasonable grassland grazing methods is to remain a critical issue for the ecological conservation and rational utilization of desert steppe. Therefore, our objectives were to explore the effects of warming seasonal rotation grazing on the species diversity and functional diversity of grassland plants and to reveal controlling factors of plant community diversity. The warm-season rotational grazing modes included traditional time of grazing (FG), delayed start of grazing (YG), early end of grazing (TG), delayed start early end of grazing (YT), and enclosed steppe (CK). The results showed that the important value of Agropyron mongolicum of the gramineae and Lespedeza potaninii of the leguminosae in YG increased by 12.10%-120.66% and 23.57%-34.25% than other treatments (CK, FG, TG, and YT), respectively. Therefore, the YG treatment has more advantages on the IV of A. mongolicum of the gramineae and L. potaninii of the leguminosae. Warming seasonal rotational grazing (FG, YG, TG, and YT) significantly increased the important value of Leymus secalinus by 51.43%-79.64% compared with CK (p < .05). Compared with CK, FG and YG promoted the growth of gramineae and appropriately reduced the proportion of forbs. There was no significant difference in the Shannon-Wiener index between grazing treatments and CK, while the Shannon-Wiener index in YT increased by 21.43% and 15.71% compared with FG and YG (p < .05). The functional richness index in FG and YG significantly decreased by 19.05%-23.81% compared with CK and TG (p < .05). The results of the redundancy analysis showed that the diversity of plant communities was mainly affected by soil-available nitrogen. These observations indicated that delayed start of grazing can improve the diversity of plant communities by increasing the important value of dominant plants in the community and promoting the growth of gramineous and leguminous plants, thereby optimizing the composition of community structure. Our findings can provide a theoretical basis for formulating a reasonable and scientific grazing period in desert steppe.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the correlation between the mRNA levels of breast cancer resistance protein (BCRP) and lung-specific X protein (LUNX) genes with pathological types and stages of patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and their significance for prognosis. METHODS: Eighty nine patients with NSCLC admitted to Huaihe Hospital of Henan University between June 2015 and June 2018 were recruited, with 55 patients with benign lung lesions admitted during the same period of time selected as the control group. The mRNA levels of BCRP and LUNX genes were detected in the peripheral blood samples from the two groups, and their correlation with the clinicopathological characteristics and prognosis of the patients was analyzed. RESULTS: The expression rates of BCRP and LUNX mRNA in the NSCLC group were significantly higher compared with the control group (P < 0.05). The level of BCRP mRNA of the NSCLC patients has correlated with the degree of differentiation and TNM staging (P < 0.05), but not with gender, age, smoking, pathological types and lymph node metastasis (P > 0.05). The level of LUNX mRNA of them has correlated with the degree of differentiation, TNM staging and lymph node metastasis (P < 0.05), but not with gender, age, smoking, and pathological types (P > 0.05). Compared with those with no expression, the overall survival rate of patients with BCRP and LUNX expression was significantly lower (P < 0.05). The degree of differentiation, TNM staging, lymph node metastasis, and expression of the BCRP and LUNX mRNA may all affect the prognosis of the patients. CONCLUSION: The levels of BCRP and LUNX mRNA in the peripheral blood of patients with NSCLC are significantly increased. The expression of BCRP mRNA is correlated with the degree of differentiation and TNM staging, whilst the expression of LUNX mRNA is correlated with the differentiation degree, TNM staging and lymph node metastasis. Both may be used as independent predictors for the prognosis of patients with NSCLC.

RESUMO

It is critical to find fast and robust biomarkers for sepsis to reduce the patient's risk for morbidity and mortality. In this work, we compared serum protein expression levels of regenerating islet-derived protein 3 gamma (REG3A) between patients with sepsis and healthy controls and found that serum REG3A protein was significantly elevated in patients with sepsis. In addition, expression level of serum REG3A protein was markedly correlated with the Sequential Organ Failure Assessment score, Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation II score, and C-reactive protein levels of patients with sepsis. Serum REG3A protein expression level was also confirmed to have good diagnostic value to differentiate patients with sepsis from healthy controls. Finally, serum REG3A protein expression level was found to have good prognostic value to predict the 28-day survival rate of patients with sepsis. In conclusion, our work indicated that serum REG3A may be a novel biomarker for sepsis.

RESUMO

Ningxia is an important agriculture-pastoral area in China. Research on the temporal and spatial variations of net primary productivity (NPP) in this area and its driving factors would help understand the trends and leading factors of NPP variations, and reveal vegetation restoration status and causes. Based on the NPP data of MODIS, we used Theil-Sen Median trend analysis, correlation analysis, overlay analysis and other methods to analyze the spatiotemporal variations and driving factors of NPP in Ningxia. The results showed that NPP of Ningxia vegetation showed a fluctuating upward trend during 2000-2019, with a linear growth rate of 5.46 g C·m-2·a-1. The NPP presented a spatial characteristics of "two high and two low", with the highest in the southern mountain area, followed by the Yellow River irrigation area, and the lowest in the hilly area of the central arid zone and Helan Mountain. 84.2% of the NPP in the study area was under significant restoration, mainly distributed in the central and southern mountainous and hilly areas. The NPP varied significantly with altitude and was significantly affected by the terrain. NPP center of gravity had generally moved to the south, with the increase and growth rate of NPP of vegetation in the south being greater than that in the north. The annual precipitation in Ningxia had shown an increasing trend, while the average annual temperature had slightly decreased. The NPP was significantly affec-ted by precipitation (R2=0.291), whereas the correlation between mean annual temperature and NPP was weak. 96.9% of the study area was at a state of vegetation restoration, which was promoted by both climate change and human activities.

RESUMO

Scientific irrigation is of great significance to plant seed production. With two excellent native plant species in desert steppe, Agropyron mongolicum and Lespedeza potaninii, as the objects, and full irrigation as the control, we explored the effects of deficit irrigation in different growth stages on the seed production and water use efficiency (WUE) of those two species. The results showed that, compared with the control, soil water content of both species decreased under deficit irrigation. The decrease of soil water content of A. mongolicum mainly occurred in the 0-60 cm soil layer, while there was no obvious stratification for the reduction of soil water content of L. potaninii. There were significant differences in the yield components of A. mongolica under deficit irrigation. The seed yield of deficit irrigation at the flowering stage was the highest. There were significant differences in the numbers of fertile tillers, florets and pods of L. potaninii among treatments, but no significant difference in seed yield. There were positive correlations between seed yield of A. mongolicum and the numbers of fertile tillers (r=0.776) and spikelets (r=0.717). The racemes of L. potaninii was significantly negatively correlated with the number of fertile tillers (r=-0.685), and positively correlated with the number of florets (r=0.412). Compared with full irrigation, water consumption of seed production of the two native plant species was reduced under deficit irrigation, but water use efficiency was improved, with the strongest improvement at the flowering stage of A. mongolicum (32.9%) and at the branching stage of L. potaninii (27.4%). Therefore, proper deficit irrigation could improve water use efficiency of both plant species. From the perspective of water use efficiency and seed yield, deficit irrigation could be used for artificial breeding of A. mongolicum and L. potaninii seeds in arid area, with the suitable growth stage for deficit being the flowering and the branching stages, respectively.
